Liverpool FC has bid farewell to its star
Colombian international winger, Luis Díaz, as he completes a permanent transfer to Bayern Munich after three and a half memorable years with the
Reds. The Colombian departs having played a significant role in winning four
major trophies since his arrival from FC Porto in early 2022, most notably last
season's Premier League title, the 2021-22 FA Cup, and two Carabao Cup
titles in 2022 and 2024.
An Instant Impact at Anfield
Signed by Jürgen Klopp, Díaz made an immediate
and electrifying impact. His pace, trickery, and productivity from various
attacking positions were evident from his very first appearance in a Liverpool
shirt. The first half-season was eventful for "Lucho" at the club, as
he scored six goals and provided four assists in 26 games before the end of the
2021-22 campaign.
He was instrumental in driving the Reds toward
a fantastic quadruple chase, starting both Wembley finals as the team won the
Carabao Cup and the FA Cup—each time via a penalty shootout against Chelsea.
Díaz was also in the squad when Klopp's side—which finished as runners-up in
the Premier League—narrowly lost to Real Madrid in the Champions League final
in Paris.
A serious knee injury sustained in the early
stages of the following season prevented Díaz from building on his strong start
at Anfield, limiting him to just 21 appearances in the 2022-23 season.
The Iconic No. 7 and a Tactical Shift
That summer, he switched his squad number to
become Liverpool's latest iconic No. 7 and began to consistently show his best form. Over
the next two seasons, Díaz represented the Reds 101 times, scoring 30 goals and providing 10 assists. Liverpool secured another Carabao Cup victory at
Wembley in the 2023-24 season before Klopp stepped down, with Arne Slot taking
over as the club's new head coach.
While Díaz had mostly played in wide roles for
the Reds, Slot increasingly utilized him as a central striker in the attacking
trio during this past season. The move paid off handsomely. Díaz enjoyed his
best-ever season for Liverpool, helping to lead the team to the Premier League title, which was secured with four games to spare.
Thirteen of his 17 total goals in the 2024-25
season came in the Premier League, including a memorable brace at Old Trafford
as Slot's team laid down an early-season marker. Among his standout personal
achievements in his final season was a second-half hat-trick during a stunning
4-0 Champions League victory over Bayer Leverkusen at Anfield.
The final cheers of his Reds career will forever
be the celebratory scenes he was a part of in April and May as the team
clinched the league title and then celebrated it with the fans.
Díaz now begins another chapter in his
professional career by completing his permanent move to the German Bundesliga with Bayern Munich.
Everyone at Liverpool FC thanks Luis for all of
his contributions during his time at the club and wishes him the very best for
the future.
