Iran announces 6,000 cases of coronavirus in 24 hours, new record

Iran announced on Friday that it had recorded more than 6,000 infections with the new coronavirus in the past 24 hours, a new record of cases.

Health ministry spokeswoman Sima Sadat Lari said 6,134 cases and 335 deaths had been confirmed, bringing the total to 556,891 infections and 31,985 deaths since the start of the epidemic.

Iran announced a previous record on Wednesday, with 5,616 infections.

Daily mortality has only increased since the beginning of September, the latest record dating back to Monday with 337 deaths in Iran, the country most affected by the pandemic in the Middle East.

According to Ms. Lari, 27 of Iran's 31 provinces are currently in the highest “red” category.

In order to curb the epidemic, Iran imposed restrictions in the spring - without ever imposing general containment - part of which was lifted quickly enough to revive the country's economy. Wearing a mask remains compulsory outdoors throughout the country.
