Outrage in the U.S, An unarmed black man killed by a police officer

A black man was killed by a white police officer in Columbus, Ohio, the second in a few weeks in this northern U.S. city, sparking outrage in a country that has seen a historic movement against police violence since the spring.

Andre Maurice Hill, 47, was in the garage of a house on Monday night when he was shot several times by the police officer. The police had been called to the scene for a minor incident.

The images from the officer's pedestrian camera show Andre Hill walking towards the officer holding a cell phone in his left hand, his other hand remaining invisible. Seconds later, the officer fired his weapon and Hill collapsed. There is no sound to explain the circumstances of the shooting.

The officer, Adam Coy, and his colleague wait several minutes before approaching the victim, who is still alive and who later dies.

Adam Coy has been suspended. According to local media reports, he has already been targeted by complaints of excessive use of force.

Hill, who was unarmed, is the second African-American killed by police in less than three weeks in Columbus.

Casey Goodson Jr. 23 years old, was shot several times on December 4 while returning home from buying sandwiches.

"Once again, officers see a black man and conclude that he is a dangerous criminal," said lawyer Ben Crump, who defends several families of victims, including George Floyd's, on Wednesday. Floyd's death at the end of May triggered a wave of protests against racism and police violence in the country.

Andre Hill is the 96th black victim of a police officer since George Floyd, he added, denouncing "a tragic succession" of fatal incidents involving police officers.

Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther said he was "outraged" by Hill's death. He "was known to the residents of the house in front of which he parked his car and was a guest, not a burglar," he said at a press conference Wednesday.

Mr. Ginther said he was further "disturbed" by the failure of the two police officers present to provide first aid to Hill. He called for the "immediate dismissal" of Constable Coy.
