The Libyan Political Dialogue Forum awaits one-week meetings to vote on the new executive authority

Aqeelah Saleh is one of the most prominent names nominated for membership in the Presidential Council


The United Nations announced on Saturday evening the approval of 21 candidates for the post of prime minister and 24 candidates for membership of the Presidency Council in Libya, after the deadline for receiving nominations for positions of the executive authority expired last Thursday.


AccordingstatementIssued by the United Nations Mission in Libya, the mission will hold a meeting of the full-fledged Libyan Political Dialogue Forum in Switzerland from 1 to 5 February to conduct the voting process on the new interim executive authority.


A three-member examination committee of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum will be in charge of examining the candidates' applications and ensuring their conformity with the nomination criteria agreed upon by the forum in Tunis.


Among the most prominent candidates for prime minister are the Minister of Interior in the Government of National Accord, Fathi Bashagha, and Deputy Prime Minister Ahmed Maitiq. While the most prominent candidates for membership in the Presidency Council are President of the Supreme Council of State, Khaled Al-Mishri, Speaker of Parliament, Aguila Saleh, and Defense Minister Salah Al-Nimroush.


The statement pointed out that all the candidates for prime minister and membership of the Presidency Council "pledged to respect the roadmap that paves the way for elections," and pledged "in the event that they choose the executive authority, to submit a declaration to the relevant supervisory authorities of their properties."


 The candidates also pledged not to run in the elections at the end of the primary period and signed a legally binding affidavit confirming their compliance with the current Libyan nationality law.


In October the Government of National Accord in Tripoli and the Libyan National Army led by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar agreed to a ceasefire.


The Libyan parties agreed at the Forum for Political Dialogue, whose first round was held in Tunis on the ninth of last November, to hold general elections on December 24, 2021.
