Google abandons Android Jelly Bean after 9 years of good and loyal service by cutting off access to Google Play services.

Replaced in September 2013 by Android 4.4 "KitKat", Android Jelly Bean (versions 4.1 to 4.3.1) joined this week the graveyard of old versions of Google's mobile OS. Disused after nine years of support, it will soon no longer be eligible for Google Play services.

"We are no longer supporting Jelly Bean in future versions of Google Play services," Google explains in a blog post dedicated to Android developers. "For devices running Jelly Bean, Google will no longer update the APK for Play services beyond version 21.30.99, scheduled for the end of August 2021." In other words, by the end of August, Jelly Bean will be permanently shelved.

OBSOLETE VERSION OF ANDROID

As Google points out, Jelly Bean does not really carry much weight on a global scale anymore. Today, this version of the OS is used on less than 1% of active devices at this stage, we read. Its abandonment therefore seems quite logical, especially since many modern features were not supported.

Neowin indicates that this end of support will affect, on the other hand, and this is logical, developers using the APIs of level 16, 17 and 18. These developers will have to migrate to at least version 19, which corresponds to Android 4.4 KitKat. This measure should not affect many people according to Google, which notes that "a very small percentage of all Android devices use API levels below 19". "We believe that many of these older devices are not actively used," the group further states, which wants to put the scope of this now imminent end of support into perspective.
