Britney Spears Documentary: A huge reaction on social networks

#FreeBritney: The documentary "Framing Britney Spears" questions the decision to place the star AP under guardianship.

#FreeBritney Britney Spears Documentary

A documentary on the singer Britney Spears aired on February 5 in the United States is causing a huge reaction on social networks. Entitled Framing Britney Spears, it retraces the star's descent into hell, and questions her being placed under guardianship, which, according to some, would benefit her father Jamie Spears.

On February 5, the American channel Fx and the Hulu platform broadcast a documentary on pop star Britney Spears. Produced by the New York Times and directed by Samantha Stark, Framing Britney Spears traces the American singer's descent into hell and her complicated relationship with celebrity. But the aspect of the documentary that provokes the most reaction is the fact that she is under guardianship.

"What do we want?", "Let Britney be free", "When do we want her free", "Now!". These are the slogans that Britney Spears fans regularly chant at demonstrations. For several months now, the #FreeBritney movement has been gaining momentum on social networks. According to the pop star's fans, her being under guardianship deprives her of her freedom. The 39-year-old singer would not be free to make decisions without the agreement of her guardians or to manage her fortune herself. The #FreeBritney movement wants to highlight this deprivation of rights.

A guardianship that has lasted since 2008

Mission accomplished as the documentary Framing Britney Spears focuses on the case and the role that her fame and media pressure played in her descent into hell and eventual placement under guardianship. After a first screening, viewers quickly took to social networks to share their feelings about the documentary's shocking revelations.

To understand these accusations, we must return to 2008. While Britney Spears "flipped out" publicly in front of cameras around the world, she was temporarily placed under guardianship by the justice system. But the decision quickly becomes permanent. The singer's finances were first placed under the supervision of her father Jamie Spears and a lawyer, Andrew Wallet. However, the latter resigned in 2019 and Britney Spears' father became the sole manager of her assets.

Fans point the finger at the star's father

Many fans accuse the singer's father of taking advantage of the situation to get rich on his daughter's back. One of the people in Britney Spears' circle interviewed in Framing Britney Spears even tells of hearing the singer's father say, "My daughter is going to be so rich that she's going to buy me a boat." The documentary questions the strict guardianship under which the star finds herself. A measure usually reserved for people with severely impaired mental abilities who are unable to make their own decisions.

The #FreeBritney movement has exploded in recent months as the singer has opposed her guardianship in court for the first time. Last November, Britney Spears went to a judge to ask that her father cease to be her guardian. "My client informed me that she is afraid of her father... She will not go on stage if he continues to be in charge of her career," Spears' lawyer, Samuel D. Ingham III, told the judge during one of the preliminary hearings. But the star's request was denied by the Los Angeles court.

Britney Spears has not been back on stage since 2018 when she performed in Las Vegas for her residency, "Britney: Domination". The singer cancelled the second part of her residency in Las Vegas in 2019. The release of the documentary produced by the New York Times should not appease the pop star's fans who are demanding justice. On Saturday, the hashtag #FramingBritneySpears remained trendy for several hours.
