Canadian Actor Christopher Plummer died

The actor died this Friday morning, in his residence, at the age of 91. He was notably known for his role in "The Sound of Music".

Canadian actor Christopher Plummer, 91, known for his role as Captain Von Trapp in The Sound of Music, died Friday, February 5, at his home in Connecticut, reports Associated Press. Becoming the oldest Oscar-winning actor at 82, Plummer had a long career, which began in the 1958s with Sidney Lumet's The Young and the Restless.

"Chris was an extraordinary man, who loved and deeply respected his profession [...]. He was a national treasure who deeply appreciated his Canadian roots. His art and humanity touched all our hearts and his legendary life will live on for generations to come. He will always be with us," his friend and agent Lou Pitt, who was at his side for 46 years, told The Guardian.

Raised in Montreal, Christopher Plummer's career spanned 75 years, beginning in both English and French. He had to wait until the venerable age of 82 to win his first Oscar in 2012 for a second role alongside Ewan McGregor and France's Mélanie Laurent in Beginners. The l2actor was nominated for an Oscar a few years later for Ridley Scott's All the Money in the World, a film in which he replaced Kevin Spacey at the drop of a hat, caught up by accusations of sexual abuse.

He remains to this day the oldest actor to win the precious golden statuette. The name of Christopher Plummer remains paradoxically little known to the general public although he has played in more than a hundred films as varied as Terry Gilliam's The Army of 12 Monkeys, Malcolm X by Spike Lee or Star Trek 6: Unknown Land by Nicholas Meyer.

He recently played a role in Rian Johnson's A Knife from the Knife by Rian Johnson, alongside Daniel Craig and Chris Evans. Christopher Plummer passed away at his home in Connecticut, in the northeastern United States, at the side of his wife Elaine Taylor, with whom he had been married for 53 years.
